Toyota is recalling 30,978 model-year 2026 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid vehicles in the U.S. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lists the recall as campaign 26V659000. Toyota's own number is 26TA22.
The problem is in the motor generator electronic control unit. NHTSA says it can develop an error that reduces power or shuts down the plug-in hybrid system at higher speeds. An unexpected shutdown can cause a loss of drive power.
What owners should do
Dealers will update the software on the control unit. The repair is free. Owners can call Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.
NHTSA's record says owner letters are expected to start on November 22, 2026. Toyota told local news outlets that owners would be notified by early December. Owners do not need to wait for a letter. They can check a VIN on Toyota's recall site or at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
